Father Reggie Payne-Wiens Rector: The Reverend Reginald (Reggie) Payne-Wiens

Rev. Reggie was born in Miami, Florida into a military family that lived in Spain and settled in Valdosta, Georgia when he was in the fourth grade.  He graduated from Valdosta State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and received his Masters of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia.  He has served in parishes in Washington, DC, New Jersey, and southern California.  He also served as the Diocesan Youth Coordinator for SE Florida, and has a deep affinity for youth and young adults.  He enjoys bowling, golf, art and music.

Rev. Reggie is married to Elena Payne-Wiens and they have two daughters: Maya, who is Family_1eight, and Talia, who is five.  Father Reggie and his family are excited about the opportunity to serve the community of St. James’ and to share in its ministry.  He believes that God has created him to lead and serve St. James’ as we respond to God’s call to be the voice that shouts to everyone in Austin and beyond, all are welcome here!

My father served in the Air Force for 26 years and passed away 10 years ago and I miss him. My mother was a homemaker during my childhood and then became a quality control inspector for the Dillard’s Department stores before retiring last year.  She now spends her time traveling to see her grandchildren in California and in Georgia with occasional stops in Reno...I have two younger brothers, Tony and Rodney, who live in Family_2Valdosta, Georgia along with my baby sister, Elizabeth.

We were both in volunteer service communities in Washington, DC.  Helen, one of my housemates worked at Samaritan Ministries with Elena.  My volunteer community use to stage coffee house performances at our house and invite volunteers from other communities to watch us perform.  Helen, invited Elena and her community and the rest, as they say is history.

Margureta Assistant to the Rector: The Reverend Margarita Arroyo

The Reverend Margarita Arroyo
I was born in Laredo Texas, but grew up in Nuevo Laredo, Tamps., Mexico from birth until 3rd Grade.  Then, my parents moved to Chicago, Illinois where we lived until I finished 7th Grade.  We returned to Laredo, Texas where I graduated from high school in 1984 and attended junior college.  I have two master’s degrees in Social Work and Divinity and am a licensed clinical social worker.  I married Eric Coy Arroyo in 1996, and our son Isaiah was born in 1999.  Our dog, Mac Piazza, came to live with us in 2006.  I was ordained as a deacon in the Episcopal Church in 2000, and as a priest in 2001.  I am mainly responsible for the Spanish Service at St. James and its members.  I work mainly on Sundays.  During the week, I am disguised as an Information Technology Project Manager for the Texas Water Development Board.

When I arrived at St. James' Episcopal Church in 2004, I was ready to walk away from the church because I had found that I was different.  I did not fit the mold of traditional clergy.  I struggled to find a church that welcomed diversity.  Then I was hired at St. James' to help with the Spanish Service and I have been here ever since.  I found healing from my past as a Hispanic woman priest.  I felt empowered when I preached because I was encouraged to have a voice in the church.  I was able to minister to those who also felt discouraged and hurt by an organized religion.  I found God's Grace to overcome the tomb of despair and depression and reach the greatest gift that Christ has offered--the resurrection.  Through the music, love, and understanding with which the Christian Community of St. James' surrounded me in my first years at St. James', I have been able to fulfill my ministry as an ordained priest.  I will always be grateful for this opportunity and gift.

The Rev. Ed Hartwell, Assistant Priest

Ed Hartwell is a retired priest who served numerous churches in the Diocese of Texas across the state from Beaumont to Austin, where he was rector of St. George’s and Chairman St. Andrew’s School Board in the turbulent 60s.  With an MA in Educational Psychology, Ed also spent years counseling persons with emotional disabilities and veterans.  His more recent ministries include working for peace and justice for Palestinians.  He was the founder of the Interfaith Community for Palestinian Rights, which began as an adult class at St. James’ 10 years ago; he has a comprehensive library on the Middle East available to interested borrowers.  Ed taught a 2010 Lenten series on Marcus Borg’s The Last Week, related to his scriptural and theological interest in studying the life of Jesus in the context of his life and ministry in Palestine under Roman occupation so as to better understand what his teachings meant to his disciples at
that time and to our lives today.
